THE POWER OF EDUCATION: FINAL CONFERENCE OF THE PRACTICE PROJECT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.danilodolci.org\/project\/practice\/\"><strong>PRACTICE<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0project is coming to an end. After 3 years of work, development of many useful tools for secondary school\u2019s teachers and students, guidelines and researches about radicalisation prevention in schools, it is time for dissemination!<\/p>\n<p>Last 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of July, a final online conference has been organised by the partner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmop.gr\/\">KMOP \u2013 Social Action and Innovation Centre<\/a>, for presenting the final project\u2019s results and discussing the phenomenon of violent radicalisation and the ways to prevent it from the school environment, together with the project partners, external experts and a large audience made up of teachers and educators from all Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion, that was coordinated by the project manager of KMOP\u00a0<strong>Afroditi Azari<\/strong>, was attended by more than 370 people. During the online event terms such as racism, polarisation, social exclusion, radicalisation and violent radicalisation were analysed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antonella Alessi<\/strong>, head of the PRACTICE project from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/danilodolci.org\/\">CSC<\/a>, pointed out that the ultimate goal of the project was to fulfil two basic needs: on the one hand, to provide teachers with the necessary tools in order to develop students\u2019 critical thinking about controversial and sensitive issues, as well as to better understand values \u200b\u200bsuch as diversity and acceptance. On the other hand, it aims to strengthen teachers in order to become the \u201cmediators\u201d in reconciling the different views of students.\u00a0<strong>Alberto Biondo<\/strong>, EU department coordinator of CSC, focused on the roots of PRACTICE project saying: \u201c<em>To have a nonviolent relation means to learn how to communicate: if you want to communicate you need to understand your counterpart, the other. You need to see the other as a collaborator<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Afroditi<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Azari<\/strong>\u00a0reviewed the findings of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/practice-school.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/practice-crr-web-en.pdf\"><strong>comparative report<\/strong><\/a>, emphasising in the factors that may lead to violent radicalisation such as social, religious, trauma, identity crisis.\u00a0<em>\u201cResults indicated that education professionals believe that there is a connection between critical thinking and radicalism prevention; however, there are no official methods for the prevention of extremism through critical thinking development. Thus, Continuing Professional Development programmes on the use of critical thinking skills for the prevention and combating of extremism, support from the State and NGOs, tools, strategies, materials and resources are needed\u201d<\/em>, Ms. Azari said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Margit Helle Thomsen<\/strong>, owner and director of development at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mhtconsult.dk\/\">MHT<\/a>, presented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/practice-school.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/practice-teachers-handbook-en.pdf\"><strong>The Teacher\u2019s Handbook<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that was created as part of the project. As she explained, it aims to provide advices and guidelines in terms of:<br \/>\n1) Testing peer-based learning processes, where students through their collaboration show mutual recognition and respect for differences.<br \/>\n2) Strengthening awareness of signs in the classroom of lack of wellbeing, exclusion and alienation.<br \/>\n3) Introduction of radicalisation and other sensitive phenomena in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stacey Robinson<\/strong>, psychologist and European project manager at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.expandinghorizons.co.uk\/\">MEH<\/a>, presented the\u00a0<strong>policy recommendations<\/strong>\u00a0resulting from the project.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.\u00a0<strong>Vasiliki Artinopoulou<\/strong>, professor at the Department of Sociology of\u00a0<strong>Panteion University<\/strong>, referred to mmodern approaches to\u00a0<strong>prevent radicalisation in education<\/strong>. She pointed out that the concept of radicalisation is full of misinterpretations, with the most typical example being defined as radicalisation a predictable bad behaviour. However, she added, radicalisation remains a rather problematic term because it depends on how we define three contexts: politics, security and the context of integration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naya Boemi<\/strong>, coordinator of the Theatrical Education project, referred to the\u00a0<strong>school\u2019s role<\/strong>\u00a0in preventing violent radicalisation and highlighted methods related to critical pedagogical theory and social theatre \u2013 such as the Theatre of the Oppressed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sebastian Schw\u00e4be<\/strong>, project manager from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blinc-eu.org\/\">BLINC Germany<\/a>, explained how the\u00a0<strong>theoretical background<\/strong>\u00a0of the research was linked to the students.
